FAQ

CO2 Gas System

If Mosquito traps don’t need carbon dioxide (CO2) gas to attract mosquitoes why does the Slayer Pro & other mosquito traps include a CO2 gas release system?
The system is designed to increase capture rates, but its use is entirely optional. Even without the CO2 system, Slayer mosquito traps still catch considerable numbers of mosquitoes and other biting insects. However for optimum catch rates CO2 is essential.

Just like beer CO2, soft drinks and sparkling mineral water co2. CO2 gas in this form is able to be purchased from hundreds of gas supply outlets throughout the U.S.A. (and the rest of the world) like PraxAir, Air Products and BOC Gases. Alternatively, look in your yellow pages under Industrial Gases or Welding Supplies. On this website go to the home page Navigation bar side to find your local Australian BOC gas outlet. For overseas buyers, refer to the Yellow pages preferably.

How long will a CO2 cylinder last?
Quantities of CO2 gas released by the Slayer Pro running 24 hrs a day will last 3 months. We recommend 9kg bottles, as they are more managable. A 9 kg bottle is locally aprox $38 to refill

Will my Slayer Series or Pro Mosquito Trap permanently eliminate mosquitos in the area?
Mosquito control is an ongoing thing, however if you follow the 9 tips that we provide as well, you will be pleasantly surprised at the results. The best you can do is devise an effective mosquito management plan for your area using the best available control strategies including one or more Slayer Series or Pro Mosquito Traps. Bear in mind that there will always be the rogue mosquito being blown in by the wind or straying from your neighbours, but i know, you will be more than happy with the results

How does the Ultra’s CO2 gas release system work?
Conventional traps which burn propane, release CO2 in a continuous stream as part of the exhaust gases from the propane combustion process ( like the mosquito magnet ).  This process is regarded as extremely inadequate. Slayer Pro's gas release system is designed to replicate a key element of human respiration by releasing quantities of pure CO2 at varying and pulsating rates ( just like when you breath) over 24hrs intervals to produce a concentration gradient in the air plume emanating from the lower part of the trap. Mosquitoes use this concentration gradient to navigate their way to the trap, thinking that it is a human.

Where do I get the CO2 from?
The Slayer Pro system is able to release more CO2 (and in a cleaner form) than propane burning traps by using the same cylinders as those used by the beverage industry to aerate (put bubbles into) drink bottles.

Is CO2 safe?
CO2 is a natural product and entirely safe in the small quantities released by the trap. However 'CO2 releasing' Slayer traps should not be used indoors.

How often do I need to operate my Slayer Series 4 or Pro Mosquito Trap?
Before you commence using your Slayer Mosquito Trap note the time of day when mosquito activity is greatest. If, for example, this is in the morning and the evening then you can manually operate the trap at these times by purchasing a relatively inexpensive timer from your local hardware. If mosquito activity is all day, as is often the case, then you will need to operate the trap 24 hours per day until the mosquito population declines. We recommend a 24 hr operation.

Is the Slayer Series 4 and Slayer Pro Mosquito Trap harmful to me or my pets?
No, Slayer  Mosquito Traps are perfectly safe for outside use around humans and pets provided it is operated in accordance with the instructions in the operation manual.

Can I use the Mega-Catch™ Mosquito Trap indoors?
Yes, but we recommend that you first remove the Mega-Catch™ Octenol Fragrence Strip because of its odor. The Slayer traps should not be used indoors unless you first disconnect the CO2 gas release system and remove the CO2 gas cylinder. The Megacatch Alpha is designed to be used indoors and outdoors.

How many traps should I buy for around my house?
This depends on the size of your property. Generally we recommend one or two traps depending on the number and location of mosquito breeding areas on your property. In optimum conditions, a Slayer Pro trap can attract mosquitoes from up to 150 feet away, a Slayer Series 4 trap from up to 120 feet and an Megacatch Alpha from up to 30 feet.

Will Slayer Mosquito Traps catch biting flies?
In addition to mosquitoes the Slayer Mosquito Traps will catch sandflies and biting midges (no see-ums) .

Can I stop my Slayer Mosquito Trap catching moths?
The Mega-Catch™ Mosquito Trap (Ultra and Premier Models only) incorporates a low intensity U.V. Bulb which emits light at a frequency our research has shown to attract certain mosquito species. Unfortunately it can also attract small quantities of non-target species like moths. If this is a problem, the U.V. Bulb can be removed and the trap will still operate effectively.

How long does the fragrance lures last and how effective are they?
Fragrance Strips should be effective for up to 30 days depending on weather conditions. Smell lures can drastically improve the capture rate of some, but not all mosquito species. Some species may not be attracted — or even repelled — by specific fragrance strips, so it pays to experiment with the mosquitoes in your environment.

How do I stop the insect residue building up to the point the fan stops?                         This question only applies to the Meagcatch Alpha in our range of products.
Clean the fan carefully following the instructions in the operation manual. Leave it to dry and then coat the inside fan housing and the tips of the fan blades with a coat of TEFLON based dry lubricant spray. This will reduce the insect residue build. Repeat the process each time you clean the fan. This will only be a problem on the Megacatch Alpha. The Slayer series uses a non-contact system which eliminates this problem. Incidently this problem is often found on most other mosquito traps on the market.
